How To Decarb Kief

how to decarb kief 5 - How To Decarb Kief

To get the most out of your cannabis plant, it’s important to utilizing every aspect of it — even the dust at the bottom of your grinder. This is true whether you’re new to using cannabis or have been for some time.

If you want to decarb kief and make the most of your weed, this is the article for you. We’ll walk you through the process step-by-step so that you can get started right away.

What Is Kief?

In the cannabis world, kief has two definitions — one technical and one laymen. Both of which are considered correct. From a scientific standpoint, a kief (plural kief) is the bulbed formation on the tip of a trichome (the resin glands of female marijuana plants that contain THC, CBD, CBG, CBN).

Kief is the term cannabis enthusiasts use to describe the plant’s terpenes and cannabinoids. Basically, it’s what gets you high or provides medical relief. Kief comes from the trichomes of the plant.

The kief is the part of the weed that gets you high, and it’s usually mixed in with regular weed so it’s diluted. But, if you use a four-piece grinder to chop up your weed, some of the kief will fall off from the plant matter into a different chamber. With enough grinding, you’ll have collected enough kief to put it to use. However, first you need to decarboxylate it.

What Is Decarboxylation?

If you’re interested in the process of decarboxylation, here’s a quick rundown. By definition, decarboxing is using high heat to turn THCA and CBDA into active THC and CBD. This is important because your body can’t utilize THCA and CBDA in their raw form.

If you don’t decarboxylation your kief, you’re not getting the full potential out of it. You might as well just be eating a salad. Decarbing is essential to experience all that cannabis has to offer in terms of recreation and medicine.

  • Oven
  • Kief
  • Oven-safe baking dish with a lid
  • Parchment paper

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 240 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Line the oven-safe baking dish with parchment paper.
  3. Spread the kief on the parchment paper, making sure there are no clumps or mounds.
  4. Cover the dish with the lid. (If you don’t have a lid, cover the dish with aluminum foil instead.)
  5. Place the covered dish in the oven and bake for the following amount of time:
  6. 30-35 minutes for THC-dominant strains
  7. 60-65 minutes for CBD-dominant strains
  8. As you bake it, the kief will get darker in color and some may melt a bit — that’s okay.
  9. After the recommended bake time, remove the dish from the oven and leave the lid or covering on so everything can cool completely.
  10. The decarbed kief is now ready for immediate use or storage.

If you opt to store the kief, ensure that it is in an airtight container and kept in a cool, dark place.

What To Do After You Decarb Kief

With decarbed kief, the options are endless! You can use it however you’d like. There are various ways to utilize kief, and we’re sure you’ll come up with something fun on your own. Just let your imagination run wild!

While you’re thinking of creative ways to use the grinder goo, here are some simple suggestions to get you started.

Mix It In Your Edibles

Decarboxylated kief is easy to consume through discreet methods, such as mixing it into food items like butter and honey, or adding it to drinks like wine and candy.

Rub It In Your Bong

If you want to turn your low-quality weed into high-quality weed, top it off with some kief after packing the bowl.

Kief is a fantastic way to enhance weak marijuana (and the subpar experience it provides) into the high-quality stuff you desire.

Spike Your Coffee Or Tea

If you want to explore kief but don’t know where to start, using it in coffee or tea is a great method. It’s effortless–simply add some into your cup and give it a stir. Additionally, decarbing kief isn’t even necessary for this process.

By adding kief to your coffee, you are essentially dissolve and activating the cannabinoids for use! However, as with all edibles — which coffee and tea technically fall under since your body must digest them before the cannabinoids make it into your bloodstream — it takes a while for the effects to set in. The upside though is that when they do finally hit, they will be stronger and last much longer than if you had just consumed regular old cannabis-free coffee. This is simply how edibles work in general. And we have to say, we’re rather pleased with this outcome considering our kief coffee recipe is what gets us through those tough mornings where all we want to do is crawl back into bed.

Shoot For The Moon

Consider using your kief to make moon rock weed. Moon rocks are a combination of raw bud, honey oil, and kief. They’ve been said by some to be the strongest cannabis in existence–though we can’t attest to that ourselves. However, what we can tell you is that they’re a lot of fun!

Roll A Thai Stick

A Thai stick is a marijuana blunt skewered on a stem, rolled in cannabis oil, sprinkled with kief, and wrapped in a whole marijuana leaf to form a swag shishkabob. When all is dry, you smoke it like an extra-large blunt cigar.

Hash It Out

Hash, short for hashish, is concentrated cannabis made from the trichomes found on marijuana plants. Hash is similar to kief in that it is composed of trichomes; however, it undergoes additional processing to form into a brick, bar, block or ball.

Here are a few easy ways you can use the kief at the bottom of your grinder to make hash:

  • Hand rolling (the most basic and traditional method of producing hash)
  • Pressing with a hot iron
  • Blending and straining
  • Passing kief through several bubble bags

Press Your Own Rosin

Did you know that kief, the power-packed resin glands containing the trichomes of the cannabis plant, can be extracted without putting any effort into grinding?

By undergoing a short, easy process that we’ll get into momentarily, you can change your kief into liquid form so that you can “squeeze it out” of the plant.

In order to make rosin, you’ll need few items on hand such as a hot plate and some parchment paper. Fill the parchment paper with your product of choice, insert it in between the two sides of the hot plate, then press together for around two seconds.

Quality Kief Starts With Quality Bud

The process of decarbing kief is vital for many cannabis enthusiasts, new and old. To produce great quality kief though, you need to start with high-quality bud — that’s why we only ever recommend using fresh, organic cannabis from a reputable source like our blog.

You could save money by buying regular or mid-grade weed, but the kief they produce will give you a disappointing moment that ruins your experience. Instead, buy the best beasters – or better yet, headies if you can afford it – to have a great time right from the beginning. Plus, with a high-quality organic strain like those grown at Medispensary, you’ll need less kief to achieve desired effects In other words, a little goes quite a long way.’
