A Space Cake (also known as a cannabis cake) is a delightful confection filled with marijuana. Space cakes, which are available in dispensaries across the country, have blossomed into extremely fashionable sweets for cannabis users. Space cakes are delectable, discrete delivery systems for reaching a beyond-this-world high (pun 100% intended).
Although many space cake recipes exist, they all rely on the same components. A space cake is simply a user-created cannabutter or other cannabis-infused fat cake recipe.
We’ll go through a popular space cake recipe so you can create the delicious cannabis treat in the comfort of your own home. But first, let’s talk about dosing.
How long do the effects of a Space Cake last?
Space Cake are edibles, which means the high will take longer to manifest than with other cannabis ingestion methods. It’s usually a good idea to start with a little serving and wait one or two hours before consuming more. Keep in mind that you have the option of eating more, but not less.
Why do edible highs seem stronger than vape or smoke highs? When you eat cannabis, the THC in the edible is transformed to 11-hydroxy-THC in your liver, which is considerably more powerful. Edibles take longer to absorb as well, since THC must travel through your digestive system before functioning.
How do I calculate the dose per serving?
To determine the amount of one serving of your space cake, you’ll need to do some arithmetic. To begin, calculate the THC concentration of the flower you’re using to bake with. So, for example, if you start with 1 g of flower containing 20% THC, you’ll end up with 200 mg of THC overall. Following decarbing and losing roughly 10% of the THC (200 x 0.9), you’ll have 180 mg total. You will have 108 mg of Cannabis in that oil after extracting it in oil or butter (180 x 0)
If you cut your space cake into eight equal wedges, each will contain about 13 mg of THC, which is a strong amount for most people. Consider reducing the proportion of cannabutter to regular butter in your recipe or cutting your space cake into smaller portions if you’re a new or low-dose cannabis user.

How to make a space cake
Step 1: Making a homemade space cake is as simple as it sounds. The first step is to decarboxylate your cannabis (convert the THCA into THC) and combine it with infused cannabutter. If you wish to skip ahead, go directly to step 5.
Step 2: To decarboxylate your cannabis flower, preheat the oven to 220 degrees Fahrenheit and weigh one gram of weed. Using a grinder, scissors, or your hands, evenly smash apart your flower and sprinkle it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake your flower for around 40 minutes, flipping it halfway through the cooking time.
Step 3: While your cannabis is cooking, prepare a double boiler and warm the butter to 220 degrees Fahrenheit. Pour the baked marijuana into the melted butter and stir thoroughly. Allow the weed butter to rest at 220 degrees for 45 minutes, then strain it through a mesh strainer or cheesecloth.
Step 4: Remove the butter from the heat and strain the plant materials through a fine-mesh strainer lined with a double layer of cheesecloth. Squeeze the plant material into a bowl or mason jar to remove most of the butter. While prepping your space cake ingredients, chill the butter until it’s slightly cooled and thickened.
Set a piece of cheesecloth over a container and add the butter. Remove the butter from heat and strain the plant material through a fine-mesh strainer lined with two layers of cheesecloth.
Step 5: Set the oven temperature to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease and flour your cake tin before coating it with cooking spray so that it is easier to remove the cake when you’re done.
Spray your cake tin with cooking spray and flour it.
Step 6: Determine how much cannabutter you’ll need. If you’re a seasoned cannabis user with a high tolerance, feel free to use the entire half-cup of cannabutter. Use only one tablespoon of cannabutter and 7 tablespoons of regular, non-infused butter if you’re a new or low-dose cannabis consumer to ensure potency isn’t too high.
Step 7: Take the flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, eggs, milk, softened cannabutter (or regular butter), and other necessary ingredients. In a big mixing bowl, combine all of the components. Stir until the dough is smooth and uniform and if desired add chocolate chips.
In a mixing bowl, combine all of the ingredients. Knead until everything is smooth and combined, about 5 minutes.
Step 8: Fill the cake pan with space cake batter and smooth it out. Bake for 20 minutes, or until your mixture is cooked through. When you prick your space cake with a toothpick, it should come out clean. If there is still residue on the toothpick after three more minutes of baking, keep cooking for another three minutes and check again.
Using an ice cream scoop, spoon the cake batter into the pan and distribute it evenly.
Step 9: After baking, allow your space cake to cool in the pan for 20 minutes before removing it. Remove the space cake from the pan and let it cool completely on a wire rack. Using an eight-inch round or six-inch square metal mold, cut your cake into eight equal servings.
Topping your cake with a slice of your space cake is the quickest and simplest method to make one.
Place cake in an airtight container and refrigerate leftovers for up to one month. It’s always a good idea to label your space cakes, especially if you have roommates. Pets and children should be kept away from it.
If you’d rather not make a totally homemade space cake, you can always use a store-bought cake mix that includes butter or oil in the ingredients. Swap out the usual butter or oil for the right ratio of cannabutter and regular butter, then follow the directions on the box.
