Vancouver is a coastal city located in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, Canada. Vancouver is the largest metropolitan area in Western Canada and third-largest in Canada, with a population of 2.6 million people as of 2016. Vancouver is one of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities in Canada; 52% of its residents have a first language other than English. The Greater Vancouver area had a population of 2,463,431 in 2016, making it the country’s 37th-largest metropolitan region.

Vancouver has ranked highly in worldwide “liveability rankings” several times. In 2018, The Economist ranked Vancouver 4th on its Worldwide Cost of Living Survey (behind only Singapore, Hong Kong and Zurich), while Mercer ranked Vancouver 3rd on its 2018 Quality of Living Survey (behind only Vienna and Zurich), with Tokyo in 4th place. According to the 2016 Census, Vancouver is Canada’s most densely populated city with 5,492 people per square kilometre, and the fifth-most densely populated city in North America behind New York City, San Francisco, Mexico City and Toronto.

The original settlement, named Gastown, grew up on clearcuts on the west edge of the Hastings Mill logging sawmill’s property, where a makeshift tavern had been set up on a plank between two stumps and the proprietor, Gassy Jack, persuaded the curious millworkers to build him a tavern, on 4 July 1867. From that first enterprise, other stores and some hotels quickly appeared along the waterfront to the west. Gastown became formally laid out as a registered townsite dubbed Granville, B.I.. As part of the land and political deal whereby the area of the townsite was made the railhead of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), it was renamed “Vancouver” and incorporated shortly thereafter as a city, in 1886.

By 1887, Vancouver’s population was over 1,000 people. However, it suffered from a series of devastating fires—the largest occurring in June 1886; another large fire in June 1894 destroyed about half of the city. The City of Vancouver was incorporated on 6 April 1886, just six weeks after British Columbia joined Canada on 20 July 1871. Vancouver achieved city status on 16 April 1886, which coincided with the opening of the transcontinental railway to the Port of Vancouver.

The CPR built its terminus on the south side of False Creek, just east of today’s Main and Georgia streets in downtown Vancouver. The first Canadian Pacific Railway train arrived on 23 June 1886, almost a year and a half after British Columbia had entered Confederation and six weeks after the City of Vancouver was incorporated. From that first arrive until 1939, almost all immigrants to Vancouver came by rail. At its peak in 1931, over 24 million passengers passed through the CPR’s Vancouver station each year; today that number is about five million. The CPR also brought with it enormous growth in trade; by 1895 Vancouver had become the third largest port in North America, after New York and San Francisco. The railway allowed the city to quickly amass a large amount of wealth and became central to its economy for much of the 20th century.

In 1939, the Canadian Pacific Railway station was moved to its current location on West Georgia Street in order to make room for development in the downtown core. The CPR’s Vancouver facilities were gradually scaled back over the next few decades as rail travel declined in popularity. Today, the only reminder of the CPR’s extensive presence in Vancouver is its iconic clock tower on Main Street, which was built in 1909 and still stands today.

The Canadian Pacific Railway has played a significant role in the development of Vancouver from its early days as a small settlement on the Fraser River to its current status as a major metropolis. The CPR was instrumental in the city’s growth and development, and its impact can still be seen in Vancouver’s downtown core.

Today, Vancouver is a thriving, cosmopolitan city with a diverse population and a vibrant economy. The CPR’s legacy is evident in the city’s layout and architecture, and its impact on Vancouver’s development is still felt today.
