Saguenay is a city in the province of Quebec, Canada. It is located on the Saguenay River, about 200 kilometres (120 mi) north of Quebec City by overland route and 170 kilometres (106 mi) via Route 175. The two cities were merged into one single city on February 18, 2002, with the name Saguenay.

Saguenay forms the core of the arrondissement of Saguenay and the administrative region of Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean. It is also the seat of the judicial district of Chicoutimi.
The Saguenay region was first inhabited by the Algonquins, who referred to the area as “Saki-nipi” (“land surrounded by water”), meaning “the land God gave to His people.” The first French explorer to visit the region was Jacques Cartier, who came in 1535.
In 1603, King Henry IV granted a charter establishing a royal colony in the area. The colony would eventually be merged into the Province of Quebec in 1763.
During the 19th century, the area became industrialized and attracted a wave of immigrants from Europe, particularly from Ireland and Scotland. Some of them worked in the local lumber industry, while others found employment in the growing number of factories.
