Kelowna is a city on Okanagan Lake in the Okanagan Valley, in the southern interior of British Columbia, Canada. It serves as the head office of the Regional District of Central Okanagan. The second-largest city in the Okanagan Valley after Vernon, it ranks as the 22nd largest city in British Columbia. Kelowna’s name derives from an Okanagan language term for “grizzly bear”.

The City of Kelowna estimated that 114,040 people lived within its boundaries in 2019. It is one of the fastest-growing cities in British Columbia, with a 5.8% average annual growth rate between 2011 and 2016, compared to the provincial average of 4.6%. The area now known as Kelowna has been inhabited for over 10,000 years. The first inhabitants were the Aboriginal people of the Syilx Nation. The region was an important trading link for the interior Salish peoples and served as a gateway to their West Coast settlements along what became known as the Fraser Canyon Gold Rush Trail.

Kelowna was officially incorporated on May 4, 1905. The following year saw the construction of Kelowna’s first road, which connected the fledgling community with neighbouring Okanagan Mission.

The early 1900s brought a period of growth for Kelowna. The completion of the CPR line in 1915 resulted in increased tourism and settlement, and by 1916 the population had reached 1,200. The establishment of many fruit packing plants also contributed to Kelowna’s development, as did the incorporation of the City of Kelowna in May 1905.

During World War II, Kelowna became home to several military training camps. In 1942, an internment camp was set up at Knox Mountain for Japanese Canadian men from across British Columbia. Approximately 1,500 men were held at the camp until 1945.

Kelowna continued to grow in the post-war years, and by 1956 the population had reached 5,000. The city’s development was spurred by the construction of the Okanagan Lake Bridge in 1958, which resulted in increased tourism and settlement. Kelowna’s population quadrupled between 1951 and 1971, reaching 20,000 by the latter year.

The 1980s and 1990s were a period of unprecedented growth for Kelowna. The city’s population doubled between 1981 and 1991, reaching 40,000 by the latter year. This growth continued throughout the 1990s, and by 2001 Kelowna’s population had reached 103,000. The city continues to grow at a rapid pace, and its population is now estimated to be over 120,000.
