Cambridge is a city located in southern Ontario at the confluence of the Grand River and Speed River in the Region of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. It was formed in 1973 by the merger of the Galt, Preston and Hespeler municipalities. The settlement of Blair, located north of Cambridge, wasn’t annexed until 1980. The city is adjacent to the townships of North Dumfries, Wilmot and Woolwich, and it completely surrounds the smaller cities of Ayr and Preston. Cambridge is about 100 km (62 mi) west of Toronto.

The site of Cambridge was selected as the County seat for Waterloo County in 1816. The first courthouse built there was destroyed by fire on 30 October 1824 and a second courthouse was built the following year. Much of Cambridge’s early growth occurred on the south side of the Grand River, which was easier to develop than its northern floodplain.

In 1846, Galt became the first incorporated municipality in Dumfries County. The town quickly became an industrial centre attracted many Irish immigrants who arrived in search of work in the rapidly growing textile mills. By 1851, the population of Galt was about 2,000. Preston and Hespeler soon developed along similar lines, with textile mills and several gristmills taking advantage of the power generated by the rivers.

Waterloo County was divided into four townships in 1850: North Dumfries, Waterloo, Woolwich and Wilmot. The town of Galt was incorporated as a city in 1915, amalgamating the townships of North Dumfries, Waterloo and Preston. In 1973, the City of Galt amalgamated with the Townships of Hespeler, Preston and Blair to form the new City of Cambridge.
